He was commissioned in the East Riding Regiment on 27 October 1915. He transferred into the Royal Flying Corps and was assigned to 43 Squadron as a Sopwith 1½ Strutter pilot. On 16 June 1917, he was part of a multi-plane assault on an Albatros D.III; he shared credit for the victory with eleven squadron-mates. Womersley went on to a second victory with the Strutter on 23 July. Womersley then switched to a single-seated Sopwith Camel for three more wins, with the final one coming on 12 November 1917. That same day, he crashed during a practice flight and was severely injured.
